In this project, I used mixed media to create an installation that expresses the "ideal perfect woman" She has blue pupils, pale skin, a gorgeous wig, a thin waist, and white breasts. She is wearing a wedding dress and is a young girl about to get married. At the same time, people think of Venus when they see her, representing her sexy side. Her whalebone corset is like an exquisite cage, showing the future of her tenderly nurturing baby, which is her side as a mother. From ancient times to the present, men's requirements for women, especially for appearance and temperament, are reflected in this girl.
With the awakening of female consciousness, more people have begun to pay attention to the social issue of body shame. Since ancient times, men have defined women's beauty in the East or the West. For example, in ancient Greece, the pursuit of vigorous beauty was like the Venus of Milo; in the sixth century BC, people advocated the beauty of symmetry; in the Middle Ages, the eyes were bright (especially blue), and the skin was white and red. The chest is small and slightly plump, and dignity and restraint are beauty standards. In the Victorian period, having the pale face of a tuberculosis patient was a beauty. In ancient China, plumpness like Concubine Yang's in the Tang Dynasty was a beauty, and from about the Northern Song Dynasty, women regarded their tiny feet as beautiful, so they needed to bind them from when they were young. Nowadays, we think that the "beauty" of these definitions is absurd, such as the waist girdle, tiny feet, and senior pale faces of tuberculosis patients. Sometimes women even sacrifice their lives to satisfy men's aesthetics.
However, men have more requirements for women's aesthetics. In the male aesthetic world, women have three ideal beautiful images, namely virgins, sluts, and mothers. A virgin represents innocence and loyalty, a slut represents sexiness and eroticism, and a mother represents a high labor value as a good nurturer. In the life of many women, they are consistently unable to resist realistic factors but reluctantly conform to male aesthetics and "perfect" themselves. Not only do they have to manage their figure and appearance, but they also need to do an excellent job in every identity of women, and one of the three is indispensable.
Today, most women in this society have realized that beauty is diverse and does not have a standard, but they may never achieve unity of knowledge and practice. Although today's society differs from the past, and there are more voices of resistance, the mainstream social concepts have not been broken. Most women have to conform to male aesthetics to seek some changes to make themselves "perfect" in body and appearance.
Combining various aesthetic standards from ancient times to the present, I designed a female character that satisfies all male aesthetics in my imagination. I hope she is beautiful, holy, vulnerable, and attractive. Everything in this work looks humorous and beautiful, and I want to use a relaxed attitude to criticize the "ideal standards" set by the conservative patriarchal society for women.
